The artist gives his £25k prize Mercury Prize to small live spaces

Sam Fender received the prestigious award in October in his hometown

The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound award winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's independent music venues.

The star was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his new release the album was named the best record of the past year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

The money supported locations that were facing possible closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from concerts in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

When the band won the prize in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would donate their prize money to the organization the charity.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite shared her bounty among several good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," the artist told outlets.

Previously, they donated their winnings to the community center that developed their act, alongside other local music groups.

Also winners that year they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the disease.

"The victory was ample," said singer Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning touched another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were purchased under the community ownership program, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
