Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
