British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
