The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
