Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a thread keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
