An Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
