"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous fans have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

However Haim will consistently be their top priority.

"We have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
